You need a business model your market will accept
Your idea needs a business model that your market will accept. This is more difficult than you might expect. It is fairly common knowledge amongst experienced entrepreneurs that your first business model will generally not work well. Expect to have to adapt what you are doing to fit the world rather than trying to change the world to fit your model. It is all very well to talk about 'educating the market', but it is better to change your business so that you will grow in the current climate and incentivise your customers to learn by providing them enough benefits that they trust you. They will then listen to the additional advantages you could offer. The emphasis here is on 'additional' as if they are not already benefiting your model is broken and needs fixing or replacing.
If your customers are businesses you can expect some apparently irrational behaviours. If for every pound you are paid a company makes £1.05 would you expect them to spend a lot? If you would expect them to want to spend then you are an optimist. Most companies believe they can make more than 5% on their money. Whether they are right depends on the amount of time/work required to get that 5%.
At one point Clickstream Technologies was generally accepted as having the best data about website behaviours in the world. The GUI (the user interface) was poor so it was decided that there might be an opportunity to provide the data for other companies with better interfaces. From a customer point of view this should have made sense as it would allow them more freedom to pick and choose their products and prevent them from being tied to one product due to having all their data stuck in an inaccessible format. In practice this was not the way things worked. The customer wanted to keep their purchasing simple, only dealing with one company and product installation. The analytics companies wanted the whole budget, and preferably to tie their customer to their product, and so tried to push Clickstream out of the conversations. The Clickstream product was a danger to incumbent products as it provided customers with the option to move. All in all it was a business model that the market space would not accept. Everyone in the market agreed it was a good idea but it conflicted with their personal incentives.
A good business model is one where everyone you are dealing with not only stands to gain but needs to do less work in order to gain. You want buying your products or services to be the easy option rather than an investment that will bring returns over time. There are visionary managers who will do what is right for their companies and are prepared to work to do so. They exist but you do not want the success of your company to rely upon finding them.
